    Dr. Azita Valinia is the Associate Director for Research and Development (R&D) of the Science and Exploration Directorate at NASA GSFC. In this capacity, she manages the Directorate's R&D program, and leads the strategic planning and development of the organization's R&D portfolio, internal investment strategy, and new initiatives. The SED R&D portfolio encompasses technology development, research and analysis programs, as well as advanced mission concept formulation. The goal of the R&D program is to infuse the technologies developed under the portfolio into future NASA Earth and Space Sciences flight missions, demonstrating the technology as well as making scientific measurements from space. Dr. Valinia also oversees the Directorate's Science Proposal Support office (SPSO), providing guidance to the office and ensuring high level of submission of high quality research proposals.

    Previously, Dr. Valinia served as the Technology Planning Manager for NASA's Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO). In that role, she led the formulation of technology requirements needed to enable the NASA Earth science program, the development of technology roadmaps, and the technology implementation plan.

    Prior to joining NASA, she was a Research Associate with the National Research Council and held Research Scientist position at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr. Valinia holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin.
