    Positions and Appointments

Dr. James A. Slavin is the Director of the Heliophysics Science Division at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (2005 - ). Previously, he was the Head of the Electrodynamics Branch (1989 2005), Discipline Scientist for Magnetospheric Physics at NASA Headquarters (1986-7), and a Staff Scientist at the California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion Laboratory (1982-7). Dr. Slavin has served or is presently serving as a Science Investigator on 19 Heliophysics and Planetary Science missions including the on-going WIND, Cluster, and MESSENGER missions and the Magnetospheric MultiScale and BepiColombo missions that are currently in development with NASA and ESA JAXA, respectively. He is the author or co-author of over 270 scientific articles concerning the solar wind interaction with planets and comets, the structure and dynamics of planetary magnetospheres, and magnetospheric substorms. Dr. Slavin has supervised seven post-doctoral fellows while at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and frequently participates in the organization of scientific meetings and in editorial capacities for various journals and monographs. He is a recipient of the NASA Medal for Exceptional Achievement in 2004 and a University of California Regent's Fellow in Space Physics for 2005-6.
