Congratulations to the NICER and TESS teams!

HQ has just announced the selections of the next two Explorer missions. Congratulations go to Dr Keith Gendreau (X-ray Astrophysics Lab) and his team for the selected NICER mission! This is an X-ray telescope dedicated to observe timing of neutron stars. NICER will be placed on the  ISS to observe pulsars to both determine the structure of neutron stars and to demonstrate their use as deep space navigation beacons. The TESS mission is led by George Ricker at MIT and managed by GSFC. TESS will make a survey of nearby stars to search for Exo-planets and will provide targets for JWST to observe and characterize their atmospheres, potentially finding nearby habitable planets in nearby solar systems.

Innovators of the Year

Keith Gendreau and the NICER/SEXTANT team were named this year’s “IRAD Innovators of the Year.” The Goddard Office of the Chief Technologist bestows the award annually on technologists who exemplify the best in R&D. Keith and his team were chosen because of their advanced thinking and sustained effort developing innovative solutions for navigating in deep space using pulsars, transmitting data via X-rays, and gathering first-of-a-kind measurements to better understand the interior composition of neutron stars. The team also includes Zaven Arzoumanian, Michael Blau, David Fickau, John Gaebler, Monther Hasouneh, Clara Hollenhorst, Lalit Jalota, Patrick Jordan, Steven Kenyon, Sridhar Manthripragada, Alissa Mitchell, Jason Mitchell, Michael Moreau, Nicholas Spartana, and Luke Winternitz.

Explorers Program

NASA announced the selection of Explorer concepts for phase A studies. ASD did quite well -- Keith Gendreau's NICER mission (PI: Keith Gendreau, Deputy PI: Zaven Arzoumanian) of opportunity was selected! And the TESS exoplanet mission (PI: George Ricker, MIT, Project Scientist: Stephen Rinehart, co-Is: Mark Clampin & Drake Deming), was selected for study. In addition, one Explorer proposal was selected for technology investment, the EXCEDE mission (Glenn Schneider, PI from Univ of Arizona). Marc Kuchner is a co-I on this proposal.

Keith Gendreau (662) and Zaven Arzoumanian (662) have proposed a multi-purpose instrument to demonstrate a potentially game-changing navigation technology that uses pulsars as a time and navigation standard. This same payload would allow them, together with an expert science team, to study the nature of matter in neutron stars. Read about it in the Spring 2011 issue of Goddard Tech Trends.

Nov 6: Elihu Boldt Memorial Symposium

Last fall, September 12, 2008, Dr. Elihu Boldt passed away. Dr. Boldt was the first head of the X-ray Astrophysics Branch in the Laboratory of High Energy Astrophysics. Some who worked with him are honoring his memory with talks on subjects that he worked on or to which their work has evolved in a half day symposium on the morning of Nov. 6.
