To mark Earth Day 2012, we are inviting you to create your own compelling video vision of NASA's exploration of Earth. You could be selected to view the launch of an upcoming Earth science mission in person! Deadline is May 31, 2012.
User Support Success Story: Optimizing the Geodesic Application
04/14/2011
SIVO staff (Maharaja Pandian and Tom Clune) have assisted a NASA Center for Climate Simulation user by optimizing the performance of his Geodesic application, which is used to visualize satellite rainfall data by mapping the data onto a representation of the Earth's surface. In its initial form, the code took over a week to map a complete set of data at its highest resolution. After profiling several scenarios, SIVO implemented three separate performance enhancements in the application, yielding a net 88 fold reduction in execution time -- an improvement of nearly two orders of magnitude. Further optimizations may become necessary as the user pushes to even higher resolutions for certain categories of data.

Congratulations to Dr. David Lary and co-authors for their paper, "Machine Learning and Bias Correction of MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth," being selected for the 2010 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Letters Prize Paper Award.
"Sentinels of the Heliosphere," an animation created by SIVO's Scientific Visualization Studio, won for "Best Science" and "Best in Show" at the 2009 Goddard Film Festival.
Tom Clune, a SIVO Senior Computational Scientist, has started a Modeling Guru blog about effective scientific modeling from a software engineering perspective.
