This is given annually by the SPIE in recognition of exceptional achievement in optical or photonic instrumentation for aerospace, atmospheric science, or astronomy. Harvey Moseley received this award in recognition of his extraordinary inventions of superconducting imaging arrays for astronomy, ranging from submillimeter bolometers to energy sensitive X-ray microcalorimeters, and even dark matter detectors, as well as microshutter arrays for the James Webb Space Telescope near IR spectrometer.

Mike was first selected last year, along with 2 other
scientists, to complete a phase-A study for his proposed
instrument development. NASA HQ evaluated the proposals this
Spring, and has selected Mike to receive funding for the
next 4 years to build PISCES, an integral field spectrograph
(IFS) to be deployed at the High Contrast Imaging Testbed
(HCIT) at JPL. This will lay the ground-work for an
eventual IFS in space to characterize exoplanetary
atmospheres.

The article "Simultaneously mitigating near-term climate change and improving human health and food security" by Drew Shindell et al was voted the best research publication of 2012 by the staff of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Co-authors included Greg Faluvegi and George Milly of GISS and 21 others. The paper was published in Science.

American Astronautical Society Lloyd V. Berkner Award

James C. Tilton was recently selected to receive the American Astronautical Society’s 2012 Lloyd V. Berkner Award, “In recognition of his efforts in commercial utilization of space technology, specifically for the commercial utilization of his Recursive Hierarchical Segmentation (RHSEG) software.” Dr. Tilton will be presented with this award at the Awards Luncheon to be held on March 20 at the Greenbelt Marriott, in conjunction with the 51st Robert H. Goddard Memorial Symposium.
The NOAA David Johnson Award is presented by the National Space Club for innovative applications of Earth observation satellite data. Doug was cited for his research on satellite-based monitoring of deforestation, forest degradation, and fires, including participation in a team of scientists responsible for a new seasonal fire forecast for South America based on MODIS data and sea surface temperature anomalies.
The award is made jointly to Alice and Dr Roger Romani from Stanford
University. The citation reads "To Alice K Harding and Roger W. Romani for
establishing a theoretical framework for understanding gamma-ray pulsars."
