Brief Bio

Steven Platnick's research includes theoretical/experimental studies of satellite, aircraft, and ground-based cloud remote sensing. He has been involved extensively with remote sensing field studies, including use of the MODIS Airborne Simulator instrument flown on the NASA ER-2 along with flight scientist roles in a number of field campaigns. He is a member of the MODIS and S-NPP Atmosphere Science Team working on operational cloud optical and microphysical products, as well as the MODIS Atmosphere Team Lead.

Platnick became a civil servant in the Climate and Radiation Branch in the Laboratory for Atmospheres in 2002 and then moved to the Earth Science Division in 2009. He has served as the head EOS Project Science Office since 2008, and as Deputy Director for Atmospheres in the Earth Science Division since January 2015. Prior to becomin a civil servant, Platnick was a research associate professor in the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology, University of Maryland Baltimore County - an affiliation begun in 1996. During this time he led the development of a comprehensive set of graduate-level atmospheric physics courses within the Department of Physics of which he taught several. He previously held a National Research Council Research Associate position at the NASA Ames Research Center as well as a research and development position at the Hewlett-Packard Co. for six years. His work with Hewlett-Packard included two years as a visiting faculty in the Department of Electrical Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University.

He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Duke University and the University of California, Berkeley, respectively, and a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Arizona.

Current Projects

MODIS Atmosphere Team Lead and Cloud Optical Products

Clouds

The GSFC Cloud Retrieval Group enhancees, maintains, and evaluates three existing MODIS Atmosphere Team algorithms currently being produced by the MODIS Adaptive Processing System (MODAPS) at NASA GSFC. These global products, produced for both MODIS Terra and Aqua, are:

1. The Level-2 Cloud Optical/Microphysical Properties component of the MODIS cloud product (MOD06 and MYD06 for Terra and Aqua, respectively), an algorithm for determining cloud retrieval thermodynamic phase, optical thickness, effective particle radius, and water path for liquid and ice clouds. Product includes pixel- level uncertainties for a subset of error sources and a variety of quality assessment fields useful for Level-3 aggregations as well as Level-2 studies.

2. All MODIS Atmosphere Team Level-3 products (cloud mask, aerosols, clouds, clearsky) on a 1° grid (MOD08/MYD08). The product includes scalar, 1-D, and 2-D statistics aggregated over one day, 8-days (half the orbit repeat cycle), and one month. Included in this effort is the refinement of a subsetted netCDF cloud dataset designed for evaluation of cloud fields produced by climate models as a companion to the COSP MODIS retrieval simulator.

3. The Atmosphere Team Level-2 Joint Product (MODATML2/ MYDATML2) consisting of essential atmosphere datasets sampled every 5-10 km in a manner consistent with the Level-3 product. Tthe product is designed: (a) for research Level-3 aggregation studies; (b) to ease storage requirements of core atmosphere data prod- ucts for users performing studies requiring Level-2 data over long time periods and/ or combined (correlated) cloud, aerosol, etc. datasets.

Suomi-NPP Atmosphere Team – Cloud Product Algorithm Development

Clouds

While critical for climate studies, continuity of cloud data records between MODIS and VIIRS is problematic because of the absence of key spectral channels on VIIRS (CO2-slicing, water vapor) and a significant change in the spectral location for a key shortwave infrared band used for cloud microphysical retrievals.

In this project we are working to develop a suite of Level-2 (L2) algorithms that can be applied to the spectral channels common to the two instruments. The code is based on the MODIS Collection 6 algorithms for cloud mask and cloud optical/microphysical properties, and the NOAA GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) algorithm for cloud-top properties. Since the algorithms can be run with similar spectral observations from both MODIS and VIIRS, they provide the basis for establishing a continuous cloud data record across the two instruments.

PACE Ocean Color Imager Cloud Product Studies

Clouds

Obtaining cloud climate data records from the current generation of global imagers (MODIS, VIIRS) is challenging due to the need for exacting reflectance stability over multiple decades. Imager stability requirements for ocean color applications have been demonstrated to the sub-percent level for SeaWiFS using lunar observations; similar capabilities for the PACE Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) are defined in the PACE Science Definition Team (SDT) report, in addition to stringent requirements in other radiometric/spectral specifications that are essential for the establishing climate records. Understanding the extent to which the PACE imager can be used to produce relevant and stable cloud products is of strategic importance.

In this project we support PACE ocean color imager instrument requirements related to cloud property retrievals as part of the “Atmospheric Correction” measurement suite.
