Brief Bio

Noah Petro first became interested in Geology as a student at Fox Lane High School in Bedford, NY. It was while he was a student at Bates College that he was introduced to the field of planetary geology. Following his PhD work at Brown University he came to NASA Goddard as a NASA Post-Doc.

Noah's reasearch focuses on the evolution of the lunar crust, specifically the role of impact cratering in distributing material across the lunar surface. He uses remotely sensed data from multiple lunar missions, as well as data and samples collected by Apollo astronauts, to create a comprehensive picture of the Moons surface.

He currently serves as a mentor to Dr. Sarah Valencia, Dr. Jordan Kendall, Dr. Daniel Moriarty, and Dr. Caitlin Ahrens.

Current Projects

Artemis III Project Scientist

Planetary Geology

As Artemis mission project scientist, Noah Petro will coordinate and support the work of the various components of the Artemis science team, which includes the Artemis internal science team, the competed geology teams, participating scientists, and the payload teams, as well as provide a voice for the entire science team with the mission operations teams.

LRO

Planetary surfaces

Noah is the Project Scientist for the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission, currently orbiting the Moon.

Management of Code 698

Noah is the Lab Chief of the Planetary Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry lab (Code 698) within the Solar System Exploration Division.

Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis

Planetary Geology

During the Apollo 17 Mission, a core sample was collected and sealed on the lunar surface. Now, some 47 years later, we are ready to open that sample and study new soils from the lunar surface!
