Missions & Projects

Current Projects

Atmosphere Observing System Deputy Project Manager

The Atmosphere Observing System project consists of the AOS-Storm (polar orbit) and AOS-Sky (inclined orbit) missions that will provide transformative three-dimensional space-based and sub-orbital observations of co-located cloud, precipitation and aerosol processes leading to improved prediction of weather, air quality, and climate.

AOS is a multi-lateral project including partners from Japan (JAXA), France (CNES), and Canada (CSA). These partnerships enable synergistic science by combining Doppler radar, lidar, polarimetric, thermal, and microwave radiometry co-located measurements – each measuring key independent atmospheric properties at the same time.

Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) Project Scientist (2020 - 2023)

Weather

Project Scientist for the Geostationary Extended Observations mission to continue and extend the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) observation of the Earth's weather and environment. GeoXO is currently in pre-formulation to establish the science measurements and constellation to be implemented to meet NOAA's observational needs.

GOES Flight Project Scientist (2018-2021, Deputy 2015-2018)

Weather

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) – R Series is the nation’s most advanced fleet of geostationary weather satellites. The GOES-R Series significantly improves the detection and observation of environmental phenomena that directly affect public safety, protection of property and our nation’s economic health and prosperity. The satellites provide advanced imaging with increased spatial resolution and faster coverage for more accurate forecasts, real-time mapping of lightning activity, and improved monitoring of solar activity and space weather. The GOES-R Series is a four-satellite program (GOES-R/S/T/U) that will extend the availability of the operational GOES satellite system through 2036.

Dr. McCorkel was selected to serve as GOES Flight Project Scientist in July 2018 following his tenure as Deputy Project Scienist for Calibration beginning in 2015 first under Dr. Dennis Chesters then Dr. Scott Braun.

Landsat 9 TIRS-2 Deputy Instrument Scientist and Calibration Lead (2015 - 2022)

The Thermal Infrared Sensor-2 (TIRS-2) is a two-channel thermal imager being built at Goddard Space Flight Center. TIRS-2 provides global, geo-located thermal image data in spectral channels centered at 10.8- and 12 micrometers with 100-m sample size over a 185-km swath. It will fly on Landsat 9, the newest addition to the Landsat satellite fleet, which will continue the legacy of the joint NASA/USGS Landsat Program proving Earth imagery since 1972. TIRS data are used by scientists around the world to derive evapotranspiration of vegetation to evaluate water consumption on field-by-filed basis, assess droughts, and aide in water use management. These data are also used to track deforestation, assess volcanic eruptions and hazards, map urban heat fluxes, monitor and assess wildfires, track material transport in lakes and coastal regions, identify mosquito breeding areas, and map power plant thermal plumes in waterways.

Dr. McCorkel joined the TIRS-2 Instrument Project in 2015 as the Product Development Lead for Calibration (sensor calbration team lead) and later became the TIRS-2 Deputy Instrument Scientist in 2016.

GLAMR Principal Investigator - Goddard Laser for Absolute Measurement of Radiance

Remote Sensing

GLAMR is a laser-based calibration facility providing sensors that operate in the solar reflective spectrum with spectral and radiometric characterization at climate-levels accuracies. NIST-traceable transfer radiometers with uncertainties as low as 0.09% (k=2) are used as a reference. Originally installed at GSFC in 2010 for CLARREO prephase A studies, the facility has expanded and supports several Earth science flight sensors including Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager-2, JPSS VIIRS, PACE's Ocean Color Instrument, and CLARREO Pathfinder. GLAMR also provides characterization for airborne instruments such as, G-LiHT (B. Cook Code 618) and Research Scanning Polarimeter. The GLAMR team continues to build more advanced tunable lasers with improved reliability, power, and redundancy to batter address demanding requirements of flight system test schedules and science characterization.
