    Research

My interest in high energy phenomena has focused on research in X-ray astrophysics. I have worked on the interpretation of X-ray sources and on satellite experiments to observe the properties of these sources. With the broad-band spectroscopy and timing experiments on OSO 8 and HEAO 1 I investigated aspects of most types of galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources. With the experiments at the focus of the HEAO 2 telescope and with BBXRT and EXOSAT, I concentrated on the X-ray emissions from the X-ray stars on the HR diagram. I worked on the design and the development of the Proportional Counter Array on RXTE and now on operations and analysis, concentrating on compact stars, for which we made XTE especially well-suited. There remain ambiguities in interpretation of X-ray spectral and timing data, which X-ray polarization measurements could resolve, and I am working towards making this possible, using micropattern detectors.
